Facebook Fanpages – why you should consider them

I’ve set up a number of these for people now and I’m often asked, “why should I bother?”. As with anything there are pros and cons to setting up a Fanpage, particularly if you are setting one up just for the sake of it.

Here’s my top three reasons why and when I think that Fanpages are worthwhile.

1. If you don’t have a blog.
If like many people you find the thought of committing to a blog too much like hard work, maybe you aren’t confident about blogging software or just don’t feel you need one at the moment, then a Fanpage can be an excellent way of sharing random thoughts or articles about yourself and your business.

2. If what you want to share covers many different media.
If you have videos, tweets, articles, websites that you’d like to share with your fans. A Fanpage is an excellent platform to share these things with; share links to youtube, slideshare, or music.

3. If you don’t have a list or collect subscribers to a newsletter.
When you are starting in business, a list is one of the things you are encouraged to build. It will be the way in which you communicate with your customers and let them know what is happening in your business. However, until you have a list (and indeed once you do have one), a Fanpage is an excellent way to keep in touch with clients, customers and contacts. It is often a lot easier to get people to become a Fan, than it is to get them to subscribe to a newsletter.

  2. Hi Emily – Oh Gawd!! Another job to add to the list then… fan page it is. (sounds a bit like a netvibes page).

I guess I’ll find out how easy it is to link an existing facebook page with a fan page – still not sure of the reasons why you need a separate ‘fan page’? Surely your ‘fans’ can just be your friends or does a fan page block their activity and just show yours? That would make sense.

I thought the facebook page was a bit mean only allowing you to import one blog/rss feed.

Thanks for the heads up anyway – there was me thinking I was doing it right – Pah!

    Jonathan.

    Hi Jonathon,

I’m not sure you’d always want all your fans to be friends? The items that that you put on your personal profile don’s how up on your fan page so you can concentrate on getting your message to the right people.

It’s really easy to set a page up, if you need any pointers let me know, it only takes a few minutes to get you up and running.

    Emily
